Why outsource manufacturing?

It seems strange that companies will invest time, money, and effort into developing products to then outsource them to a third-party manufacturer, so why is there growth in companies like G-Biosciences, who offer OEM and custom manufacturing in B2B relationships?

There can be many reasons why a manufacturer may look to outsource production but ultimately cost reductions encourage a manufacturer to look outside their own walls.  So how does outsourcing have the potential to reduce costs?

Labor Costs

Typically, labor is the largest cost for any manufacturing company. Having permanent staff on your books typically means having to cover the costs of salaries and benefits.  When labor is outsourced, whether through outsourcing the manufacturing of certain products or sourcing temporary employees from an agency, the overhead costs of labor can be greatly reduced while offering flexibility.

Lower Capital Investment

Your company may have the resources in place to develop and possibly manufacture your product in small quantities, but routinely companies are faced with a large capital investment to expand production (new bulk manufacturing equipment, increased storage, etc.).

Alternatively, a company may have the infrastructure to manufacture one type of product but require an accessory or consumable that they are not set up to manufacture. Outsourcing manufacturing to companies like G-Biosciences who are already set up for bulk manufacturing and skilled in different areas will lower capital investment.

Limited Resources

Many companies are specialized in certain techniques, which they routinely perform and perform well.  Issues arise when these companies are required to use a new technique or need to develop a new one. These companies are unable to handle a new technique as they lack the resources (equipment, personnel, capital, experience) to perform a new technique.

A good example would be companies involved in protein purification. These companies have established techniques to affinity purify a wide selection of proteins using specific resins. These companies will often outsource the development of new or novel resins to custom OEM companies like G-Biosciences as they are not set up for actual resin manufacturing.
